On April 22nd, 2025, Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI)  were honored to welcome Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego for a special visit. The Dignity Health  team, including Dr. Robert Bowser, a Principal Investigator of the ALL ALS Consortium, had the

privilege of showcasing their innovative work in the neurosciences and highlighting several  groundbreaking research initiatives currently underway.

As part of the visit, Dr. Bowser presented an overview of ALS, including an introduction to the  Gregory W. Fulton ALS Center’s comprehensive, multidisciplinary clinic at BNI. He discussed  the challenges the entire ALS community faces, the unique difficulties presented to an  increasing number of veterans with ALS, and the urgent need for continued research and  support. The conversation emphasized the vital importance of research participation in  improving care and discovering new treatments for all individuals impacted by ALS.

The visit also included an introduction to the ALL ALS Consortium. Dr. Bowser outlines how the  consortium operates, the many clinical and research sites involved across the country, and its  role in uniting clinicians, scientists, and patient communities to drive and advance ALS research  progress.

This was a meaningful opportunity to share the impactful work happening at St. Joseph’s and  BNI, and to stress the importance of community involvement and awareness in shaping a better  future for people living with ALS and other neurological conditions.

Engaging with policymakers is essential to advancing our mission. With the support of leaders  like Senator Gallego, research, medical, and patient organizations can broaden the  conversation around ALS, expand access to research and care, and build a more inclusive,  informed, and hopeful future for all communities affected by ALS.
